Altar Worker Guide

Helping Seekers With Care, Scripture, and Humility

"Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath."

James 1:19 KJV

This guide is for altar workers, ministry helpers, and anyone who assists seekers responding to the Gospel in a church, outreach, or ministry setting. Handle every soul with extreme care.

The Altar Worker's Posture

Humility

You are a witness and helper — not the Savior. Only Jesus Christ saves.

Prayerfulness

Enter every conversation with prayer. Ask the Holy Spirit to lead your words and guard the seeker's heart.

Gentleness

A bruised reed shall He not break. Meet the seeker where they are — with patience and care.

Biblical Clarity

Point to what Scripture says — not to what will make them feel immediately better.

No Manipulation

Do not use emotional pressure, crowd momentum, or urgency to push a decision. Let the Spirit work.

No Rushing False Assurance

Do not immediately tell someone 'You're saved now' based on a prayer repeated or tears shed. Encourage continued seeking.

No Public Pressure

Approach seekers quietly, personally, and gently. Not in a way that creates embarrassment or pressure.

James 1:19 KJV

"Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath."

Before offering Scripture, before offering prayer, before saying anything — listen. Understand what the seeker is actually experiencing.

Point to Jesus Christ

John 14:6 KJV

"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

You are not the way. The church is not the way. This platform is not the way. Jesus Christ alone is. Point there — clearly, consistently, and humbly.

Acts 4:12 KJV

"Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."

Jesus is not one of many options. He is the only Savior. Speak this clearly and without apology.

Explain Repentance and Faith Clearly

Do not reduce salvation to repeating a prescribed set of words. Genuine salvation is a work of God in the heart — involving conviction, repentance (turning from sin toward God), and faith in Jesus Christ.

Acts 3:19 KJV

"Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord."

Repentance is turning — a genuine change of direction from sin toward God. It is more than sorrow; it involves the will.

Romans 10:9-10 KJV

"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."

Believing in the heart — not merely repeating words. The mouth follows what the heart genuinely receives.

Prayer With a Seeker

You may pray with a seeker — this is appropriate, loving, and good.

You may gently guide them in prayer — speaking truth and inviting honest response.

Do not claim the prayer itself automatically saved them. Encourage them to keep seeking Christ.

Do not use a memorized 'sinner's prayer' as a magical formula guaranteeing salvation.

Encourage them: keep reading Scripture, keep praying, seek a Bible-believing church, stay close to the Holy Spirit.

1 John 1:9 is for ongoing life with God — remind them that honest confession is always welcomed.

1 John 1:9 KJV

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

Honest confession before God is always met with forgiveness and cleansing — not because of a formula, but because of Christ's faithfulness.

Aftercare and Next Steps

Most importantly: Connect the seeker with a mature pastor or church leader for ongoing pastoral care. Born Again 360™ is a teaching tool — not a substitute for the local church, pastoral guidance, or the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit.

Handling Sensitive Situations

Disclosure of Danger, Abuse, or Self-Harm

If someone discloses that they are in danger, being abused, or harming themselves — stop. Follow your church's safeguarding policies immediately. Involve qualified pastoral leadership, and where required by law, involve appropriate authorities. Do not handle this alone.

Do Not Promise Secrecy

Never promise to keep confidential information that involves someone's safety. Safety obligations come before confidentiality. Make this clear gently but honestly.

Do Not Try to Handle Crisis Alone

You are an altar worker, not a trained crisis counselor. Know the limits of your role. Get help. Involve your church's leadership and appropriate professionals.

Follow Applicable Laws

In many places, certain disclosures (especially involving minors) create legal reporting obligations. Know your church's policies and your local laws.

What Not to Say

"You are definitely saved now because you prayed."

Salvation is a work of God. Praying words does not automatically equal new birth. Encourage continued seeking, Scripture, church, and evidence of genuine change.

"You are lost because you cried / didn't cry / didn't feel anything."

Do not judge salvation by emotional response. Scripture, not feeling, is the measure.

"Just forget your pain — God has taken it away."

Do not minimize genuine trauma, grief, or hurt. God heals, but healing takes time and often requires pastoral and professional care.

"Go back into that situation — God will protect you."

Never send someone back into a dangerous or abusive situation. Safety and forgiveness are separate issues.

"You do not need church — just read your Bible."

Scripture commands fellowship. The local church and pastoral care are God's design for discipleship.

"This platform confirms your salvation."

Born Again 360™ is a teaching tool. It does not and cannot confirm or deny anyone's salvation before God.

Altar Worker Checklist

Listen carefully before speaking — let them express what they are feeling.

Ask gentle questions: 'What is on your heart right now?'

Read Scripture — let the Word of God speak, not just your words.

Point to Jesus Christ as the only Savior — not to the church, a leader, or a prayer.

Pray carefully — with them, not over them, without manufacturing pressure.

Encourage next steps: Scripture, church, fellowship, discipleship.

Connect them to mature pastoral leadership for follow-up.

Do not promise what only God can give.

Galatians 6:1 KJV

"Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted."

Restoration is the goal — not condemnation, not public exposure, not shame. Meekness, prayer, and humility before God.
