What Does Born Again Mean?
Jesus declared the necessity of the new birth. Understanding what it means — and what it does not mean — is essential for every soul.
"Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
John 3:3 KJV
Nicodemus Came to Jesus
Nicodemus was a Pharisee — a ruler of the Jews, a religious leader, a man of learning and authority. Yet when he came to Jesus by night, Jesus did not commend his religion. Instead, Jesus told him something that shook the foundation of religious performance:
John 3:5-6 KJV
"Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit."
Jesus drew a clear line: flesh gives birth to flesh, Spirit gives birth to spirit. No amount of religious effort can produce spiritual rebirth.
What Born Again Does Not Mean
What Born Again Does Mean
Why Jesus Said "Must"
Jesus did not say "You should consider being born again" or "It would be nice if you were born again." He said "Ye must be born again." The word "must" carries divine necessity. It is not a recommendation — it is a requirement for entrance into the kingdom of God.
John 3:7 KJV
"Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again."
Jesus knew Nicodemus would be surprised. Religious people are often the most surprised by the requirement of genuine spiritual rebirth.
Born Again 360™ Insight
Being born again is not something you add to your religious life. It is the beginning of true spiritual life.
How the New Birth Changes a Person
The born-again life produces transformation, repentance, obedience, conviction, and fruit over time. Believers can still struggle and fail, but the born-again heart is convicted, corrected, and called back to obedience.
2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV
"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."
Examine Yourself Humbly
Have you been born again? Not by your own definition — but by the definition Jesus gave? This is a question every person must ask with humility, honesty, and dependence on God's truth.
