Old Man vs New Man

The born-again life is a transformation — putting off the old and putting on the new.

"Put off concerning the former conversation the old man... and put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness."

Ephesians 4:22-24 KJV

The Old Man

The old man is the unregenerate nature — driven by flesh, pride, self-preservation, and the deceitful lusts described in Ephesians 4:22.

  • Reacts from pride
  • Defends self at any cost
  • Follows anger wherever it leads
  • Seeks revenge and retaliation
  • Hides sin and avoids accountability
  • Uses religious language without surrender
  • Protects ego above truth

The New Man

The new man is created after God in righteousness and true holiness — led by the Spirit, governed by the Word, and producing fruit.

  • Submits to Christ in humility
  • Receives correction and grows
  • Walks in repentance when convicted
  • Seeks truth with humility
  • Forgives with wisdom and boundaries
  • Practices self-control by the Spirit
  • Produces fruit of the Spirit over time

The Ongoing Battle

Being born again does not mean the old man disappears overnight. Believers can still struggle and fail. But the born-again heart is convicted, corrected, and called back to obedience. The difference is not perfection — the difference is direction.

Ephesians 4:22-24 KJV

"That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness."

Paul teaches that the born-again transformation involves actively putting off the old nature and putting on the new — this is a daily, Spirit-dependent process.
